HERE IT IS...
Right now, sitting in a warehouse in greater Vancouver, is an amazing
structure designed as a travelling exhibition of Canadian design. It is
called the All Terrain Cabin (ATC), and it was designed and built by BARK,
a not-for-profit design collective based in Vancouver.
This structure has already appeared in Calgary, Vancouver, Victoria,
Toronto and across the boarder in Atlanta, Georgia. It was a huge hit
with visitors to these shows. It is a cabin for the 21st century built
of aluminum, wood, and glass.
It travels around looking just like a standard shipping container. When
in arrives, the walls unfold to triple the useable space and to reveal
an ultra contemporary dwelling totally outfitted with the best of Canadian
design.
The ATC is designed to travel by train, truck, ship, plane, or helicopter.
It can literally go anywhere--and it is self contained: a generator running
on biodiesel is included and an "inverter" changes DC into AC.
The ATC operates off the grid. Plumbing is similarly environmentally friendly--filtering
and re-use of grey water, composting toilet, tanks of fresh water, rain
collection, etc.
It's beautiful, it's smart, it can support a family of 4, and it's all
Canadian. Both private money (from the Home Show advisors) and Federal
Government money have helped fund the building of this one of a kind cabin.
BARK wants to send it on a World Tour--for up to 5 years--and they would
prefer that as much as possible of these come from ordinary Canadians
rather than governments or large companies. This project is about raising
the travelling funds for the ATC World Tour.
